Wi-Fi in the process of upgrading

The Wi-Fi service in Desasiswa Restu, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) broke down on 20th September 2015 due to a power trip in the hostel and the residents were unable to go online although they were connected to the Wi-Fi.
In order to solve the issue, representatives from Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (MPP) had spoken to Pusat Pengetahuan Komunikasi dan Teknologi (PPKT) for further actions to be taken.
According to a representative of MPP, Mohd Fahmi Mohd Fadzli, they had spoken to the Senior Officer of Information Technology in PPKT, Shahrul Ismi Mohd Akhir, and he explained that PPKT is in the midst of upgrading the speed of the servers.
PPKT is also in the process of upgrading their Access Points (AP) which is equipped with the latest technology in all Desasiswa in the Main Campus in order to cope with the usage of students.
“As of now, PPKT has said that they are almost done with changing the AP in all Desasiswa,” said Fahmi.
Fahmi said that PPKT will only maximise the internet speed up to 1Gbps after 10pm.
On the other hand, Fahmi also said that Shahrul advises students to make use of the internet for academic purposes and not for downloading entertainment such as videos which is unimportant. This is because if students continue to misuse the Wi-Fi, problems will continue to arise.
“I would like to emphasise that students should put the Wi-Fi to good use and if there is any problems related to the Wi-Fi, students can lodge their complaint through the Service Desk operated by PPKT and further actions will be taken to resolve the issue,” said Fahmi.
