The Larian Perpaduan Belia is now back in Penang, targeting 5,000 youth to join them on 13 October at Esplanade to run for unity. Organised by Majlis Belia Negeri Pulau Pinang, a non-government organisation representing the youth of Penang, this run was bought back to Penang after its last appearance in year 1992. According to the Secretary of Larian Perpaduan Belia Pulau Pinang, Nazrul Azizi, the reason for organising this event is to encourage youth to gather and appreciate the multi racial integration. “Being an alumni myself, I know that the USM students consist of many races and sports can unite them.
The one thing that everyone can do is run for a cause”, said Nazrul. He explained that the idea of uniting people through an event of such kind came to him when he was at the Middle East. “The Beirut Marathon united the people of that region, disregarding the differences in religion or nationality”, he added.
“In Malaysia, we need that kind of unity. This can be done by encouraging youth torun for a cause”, he said. Before USM, Nazrul said that his team had been to many schools and varsities in Penang, hoping to get more participation from the youth. “Anyone who is 13 and above can join us. With just an entry fee of RM10, you can get a free t-shirt and also a certificate of participation, not to forget prizes for the winners”, said Nazrul.
The route for this run is approximately 6km, begin from Esplanade, Padang Kota Lama. Crossing Lebuh Burma to Lebuh Farquhar and finally back on Lebuh Light to the original starting point.
